A Clinical Study on Maternal Death


Abstract
Maternal mortality in St. Mary¢¥s hospital was reviewed during the. 6 year period from 1966 through 1971. There were 11,550.-live births and 51 -raernal flee. All deaths, regardless of-the cause, in pregnant women at any period of gestation or within 6 weeks of termination of the pregnancy were included in this study.
1) The maternal death rate per 100, 000 live births was 138. 5. The annual maternal death rates in St. Mary¢¥s hospital was noticed some variation from year to year.
2) The leading causes of maternal death in St. Mary¢¥s hospital were hemorrhage(31. 4%), infection (27.5% ), toxemias (19.6%x) and heart diseases (11.8%). The major causes of maternal death in early pregnancy were complications of abortion and ectopic gestation.
3) The heart diseases were responsible for the majority of indirect cause in maternal death (54.5%).
4) The most cases (66. 7%) in the maternal death were expired in first 24 hours of admission.
5) The avoidable factors in all maternal death were found greatly (80%).
